Handling Parenting Advice

People are always willing to hand out parenting advice.  Many times you do not even ask for it.  Sometimes handling parenting advice can be difficult, but it is important to remember that most of the time people are only trying to help you out, not put down your way of parenting or your skills as a parent.  You should simply learn the best ways to handle parenting advice.

Unsolicited Advice

The most common form of parenting advice is that which you do ask to get.  People will sometimes feel the need to share their parenting tips with you and you really do not care to listen.  However, for the sake of being nice and not being rude, you listen.

The best way to handle unsolicited parenting advice is just that – listen.  You may actually be surprised from time to time and learn something you can actually use.  Thank the person for sharing and move on from there.

If a person becomes quite annoying, though, you may have to say something.  You can still be polite, though.  You can simply say that you appreciate the fact they are trying to help, but you have your own methods and they are working out fine for you.

Friendly Advice

Friends are there for you through anything.  That includes parenting where your friends are sure to want to share all the parenting advice they can with you.  Your friends, though, know when you need it and when you don’t.  You will find that your friends may not just offer up advice, but rather wait for you to ask.  Keep that in mind and when you want help from your friends – ask them for it.

Friendly advice is some of the best advice because they know you and your kids.  They know if something might work for you or not and they usually are up front with things.  They are often usually not pushy and don’t care if you use their advice or not.

Professional Advice

Professional parenting advice is some of the best advice you can get.  Professionals, like doctors or psychologists, know what they are talking about.  Not only have they been educated on parenting, but they have also had plenty of experience with children.  They can give you ideas and advice that work and that have been tried before.  They can offer you an objective source of advice that you can trust.
