Most people know about all of the benefits of working from home and becoming self-employed. You get to work where you want to and when you want to. However, working from home for parents can be very difficult.

Work at home parents have to schedule their work around their family.  It is hard to be productive with children constantly at your feet.

Working at home and trying to parent takes some skill and careful planning.

One of the most important skills to have when you are a parent working from home is time management. You need to be able to schedule your own hours and stick to them. Make the most of each working hour. It can help to make a to do list for work each day and plan a week or month ahead of time. Let your spouse in on your schedule, as well as your kids so they will know when you are working and when you are off the clock. Make the most of your time - whether you are working or not.

Working from home takes a lot of self-discipline. Many people do not take advantage of working from home either because they are scared or they simply can’t work without someone else directing them on what needs to be done each day. Self-discipline is necessary to succeed in your work at home career. You need to be able to set your own hours and work when you are supposed to.

Another necessity in self-employment is perseverance. Learn from your mistakes without taking them personally. Move on and keep going no matter what. Even the most successful business owners have made mistakes, but they learned from them and moved on by not taking them to heart.

Lastly, you need a space that is comfortable for you to work in whether it is your own room or the kitchen table. Keeping this consistent will help your kids realize that when you are in that space you are working, and they should wait to speak to you unless it’s an emergency.
