Getting the intelligence quotient or IQ score is a standard way of getting a picture of an individual’s intellectual capacity. There are many popular studies nowadays on how one can increase the IQ of a child, especially in the early stages of intrauterine life. After all, what parent would pass out on the opportunity of having a child prodigy? However, there are times that the opposite scenario happens.

Finally, it makes sense why your child seems to be having difficulty in catching up with his lessons at school. No matter how hard you teach him/her, he/she does not seem to comprehend. A child with below average IQ usually encounter learning difficulties - the lower the score, the less likely he/she is capable to pick up things easily. Cases of mental retardation are often classified under the lower brackets of this group. However, it does not follow that if you have a low IQ you are already coined mentally retarded.

It is a normal reaction for parents to be disappointed at first upon the knowledge that their child possesses lower IQ score than expected. However, parents should learn to accept this fact and respect the individuality of the child. They should accept the child as a unique person that at some point can have shortcomings but have potentials within them at the same time. After all, the vital ingredients that are needed in order to raise a child include the right support and nurturing from their parents as well as their significant others.

The parents should always support these children with their endeavors while still allowing for a certain degree of independence by the child. This will help in building character as well as self-esteem.

IQ scores are important but they are still numbers. It may be a measure of one’s capacity to learn, yet it still doesn’t reflect one’s capacity to do things the right way. In the end, intelligence is not everything that would matter but the good relationship that you formed as well as the strong foundation of character that you have established within your child.
